American pondweed (Potamogeton nodosus)
Perennial rooted aquatic herb produces submersed and floating leaves. Elliptical floating leaves 4-6” long on long branched stems with brownish flower spikes rising above water surface.
American pondweed tolerates water level fluctuations, and produces underground winter buds (tubers) that facilitate survival in drought conditions.
American pondweed produces abundant seeds, widely used by puddle and diver ducks. Leaves, stems, and tubers are also important wildlife food. Also provides shade, cover, and habitat value for fish and invertebrates.
